The Lötschental

Already in the prehistory peoples travelled trough the Lötschental and over the Lötcshenpass, as many discoveries from the bronze and ice age show. Until the Middle Ages the Lötschenpas was an important connection between the Berner Oberland and Wallis.

Even nowadays the Lötschental is the start of many hikings through a very original landscape. More than 100 miles of hikingroads can be found in this valley, that belongs to the Unesco’s World Natural Heritage of the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch. The Lötschental has been closed for decades and was only openend at the beginning of the 20th century with the construction of the Lötschbergtunnel. That’s why old traditions as the carnavelesque “Tschäggätäs” still exist. The Lötschental ski-area is situated above Wiler where one can ski up to 3200m.
